Marissa Moon’s weight loss success story is one about persistence.
At her highest weight Marissa was 330 pounds and self-conscious about her appearance, so she decided she needed to make a change for herself.
After two years of being consistent with her diet, Marissa lost 160 pounds.
Marissa reached a point where her weight took control of her.
“I reached a point where I was like no longer wanting to leave my house,” Marissa says about the effect being overweight had on her life.
“I just didn’t feel comfortable even being seen in public so that motivated me to try to change my life.”
As she speaks more about her emotional issues, Marissa says, “All my life I had always been overweight.
I was always the saddest girl in the room and so whenever I first started, I really didn’t have anywhere to look.
Some people can be like, oh, I want to go back to feeling how I felt when I was 18 and be thin and beautiful.
I didn’t have that so I didn’t really know what to expect.
I didn’t know how I would feel and so I had to start from scratch and it was just really hard.”
“I was like middle age, I’m like 26 years old, so I started when I was 24 and I didn’t want to continue living my life in that direction.
So, it was either do it now or live your life overweight for the rest of your life.”
At first, Marissa lost weight by changing her diet and then adopted an exercise program.
“The first six months I did Nutri System,” Marissa says.
“I stayed on that plan and followed it and lost a good amount of weight.
Then I got kind of sick of the food and I started doing calorie counting and counting my calories.
After I lost about 130 pounds I started exercising every day.”
Marissa used the popular MyFitnessPal app to help her track calories and stay on track of her weight loss goal.
Many people who lose a significant amount of weight had a healthy support system and Marissa was no different.
“My boyfriend and my family have been really supportive,” she says.
“They just wanted to see me happy and healthy.
Other than that, my parents would call me and say, ‘Do you want to go out to eat?’ I’d be like, ‘No, sorry, I can’t today.’
They would be understanding of the situation.”
“It really is a lifestyle change,” Marissa says about losing 160 pounds over a span of two years.
“I didn’t understand those words until I actually lived it.
It’s like a lifestyle change, it’s not work.
It’s just little things over time that turns into your lifestyle.
So, you’re just living your life in a healthy way that just keeps me losing weight in which I continue to lose weight to this day by just living how I live now.”
For Marissa, controlling temptation is not about denying or depriving herself.
“Actually, I indulge in my temptation,” Marissa says about staying in control over temptations.
“I’ll have one cheat day a week and I will have what I’m craving and as long as I know that the next day I’ll get back on the horse.
The next day I’ll be back on my calorie counting, but I do indulge and I don’t stay away from my cravings, they’re natural.”
After losing 160 pounds, Marissa has an interesting perspective on weight loss and the impact it had on her life.
“I thought that losing weight would solve all my problems,” Marissa says. “…and just make me happier every day, but it really doesn’t.
You are the same person and you still get sad and you still have the same issues, but you’re just taking ‘being overweight’ out of the list of issues.
Other than that it was a hard expectation.
I thought I’d be happier all the time, but it really doesn’t fix everything, but it does certainly make life a lot easier.”
Marissa did not start exercising regularly until she had already lost 130 pounds.
She knew adding exercise before she had fully changed her lifestyle would have been too much for her.
Marissa waited until she felt it was right for her.
“I started doing the elliptical,” she says.
“I would do a mile a day.
I didn’t want to push myself and do four or five miles a day because I’m not like an athlete, but I just wanted to get in my 30 minutes a day so that I could keep doing it every day and not get burnt out.
So, I did 30 minutes on the elliptical and this past year I started doing squats and arm exercises just to tone up a little bit.”
To lose 160 pounds, Marissa finds it helpful to keep a consistent diet.
She eats the same things “every single day” and lost 2-3 pounds a week doing so.
She still maintains the same diet and continues to lose about a pound a week.
“Every single day I eat a cup of egg whites with sautéed green peppers and onions,” she details.
“I have that with two pieces of Sara Lee 45 calorie bread and six pieces of honey ham which is 60 calories.
I have my portion of egg whites and then a little ham sandwich and that’s what I have for breakfast.”
“For my dinner, I eat a chicken breast and a can of green beans or I’ll eat broccoli or carrots, whatever I’m feeling like that day and that’s what I eat for my dinner.”
Every day Marissa also gives herself a treat for dessert, which she says, “I eat five pieces of Russel Stover sugar free candy.
That’s kind of how I keep my cravings at bay because I get to eat chocolate every day, but I’m still within my calorie limit and it satisfies me.”
After losing 160 pounds, Marissa had some excess skin.
While the extra skin wasn’t noticeable when she went outside the house, knowing it was there bothered her somewhat.
She elected to have it surgically removed.
“I had a tummy tuck and breast lift and I really am happy with the decision I made,” Marissa says about the surgery.
“I feel like it’s a fresh start and I feel like it will help me continue to be healthy because I felt like I was doing a lot of it for like nothing.
I was like, man, I’m losing all this weight and I can’t even get into a bathing suit.
So, I’m really happy with the decision I made.
It is scary to go under the knife, but the pain is all worth it and I think it’s a good decision in the long run.”
